Qosmio X770-138 random shutdown
Posted: 19-Apr-2012 16:28

Hi guys, just purchased my brand new Qosmio X770-138 about a week ago and everything seemed fine until it started to shutdown randomly. It is not proper shutdowns either, just boom - off.

Now i can tell you that it it NOT heat related, it only happens when I'm idling and the CPU temp is around 40-45 degrees celsus, so I have kind of ruled that out of the "ecuation"

It has never happened when I'm running high performance games wich makes the CPU temp spikes to max 60 degrees celsius.

Now I have tried using Reeltime to "turn back the time" to an earlier date wich it did not shutdown, than it worked fine for one day, then it started to shut down again.

Now I have just updated the BIOS and both the nVIDIA and INTEL video drivers, and it hasn't shut down for about an hour, but I don't believe I'm in the clear yet.

Does anyone know what causes these kinds of shutdowns? I have F-SECURE virus/spyware protections and firewall wich is genuine, so i should be relatively good protected from the nasties.

Thanks in advance for any help! :)

And now? Does the notebook run stable? Did it shut down after the updates has been applied?
It could be possible that some driver compatibility issue caused such shutdowns…
However, use the notebook for a longer period of time and report the results…would be interesting to know how it works.

Well it turns out that it is not any driver nor BIOS related error in this case, I called Toshiba and they said that I should upgrade my BIOS, which was not the case here. Still shutted down on me. Now I can't even log on or enter my BIOS before it shuts down, so it's definitily a hardware issue.

So I went to toshiba's repaircenter here in Oslo, and I got a look on what they were working on, and there were 3 other computers (same model as mine X770-138) that had the same problem. Toshiba concluded that it was a defect in the computers motherboard that caused the shutdowns, will know more when I get it back from them.

Thanks for the feedback… seems that hardware is affected and replacement should fix this.

Okey, I just got my cosmio back from service, and the report says following:

"Tested without touch panel, hdd, ram, keyboard light. Ordered new motherboard, however discovered that the computer started fine without touchpanel, seems like on/off switch is oversensitive.
Power membrane switch is replaced, and everything is checked and OK."

Seems like the Power membrane switch was the source of the problem, and not the motherboard. Hope Toshiba would consider redesigning these switches if they can be oversensitive after a week of use.
