The Toshiba Satellite U400-157 running Windows Vista is running into numerous errors.

The latest instance being during the installation of Apple software itunes 10.5. On an initial install with the 10.4.1.10 present. It gave the error that itunes has an invalid signature, it will not be installed. After un-installing the itunes 10.4.1.10 version and on trying to install the 10.5 version, it gives the attached snap shot error messages.

Can some one please suggest what I may be able to do with the vista. Do I need to upgrade to windows 7, Will it help. I don't want to see a message that it will not install Windows 7 after having paid for it online.

“Please refer to Help and Support for more information...”
In the window title is “iTunes” and Toshiba doesn’t support this application so I’m afraid you are on wrong support page here.

What do you think? Maybe you should contact Apple support. They have best experience with own product.

I suspect the problem is infact with the Windows setup on this PC. What ever that is not right . I am not able to figure out. The reason I think so is because. The itunes is Apples software that many people are using. I even know that my friend has it installed on his XP and Windows 7 note books.

It can be possible but how should we know your Windows setup or configuration.
Do you use original preinstalled OS that you got from Toshiba?

For instance, I use Satellite P500 with “factory settings” and iTunes works perfectly. I really don’t know what the problem can be. Contact Apple support and ask what it can be. Maybe they can explain the error message.

I suspect 2 possible reasons for the malfunctioning.

1) A bios update that I did after which I notice the screen goes blank for a few seconds a couple of times at start up
2) I use the Registry first aid agent. This could have done something to settings. I tried to go in for a restore point from the registry editor, but it gives only a restore point that is later than the bios update date.

I want to do a restore to factory settings. I tried to find how to do this from
http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/generic/SUPPORT_PORTAL/
The page lets you download a note book auto detection tool which is unable to detect, neither is it able to find the serial number Y8144090W

However the tempro alert on the note reports the number correctly.

I tried the utilities installed under programs > Toshiba > utilities > HWsetup and restored HW settings to default. It did not help.

Can you please let me know where I can find the resore to factory settings is. It is not in the user manual.

I assume you want to install the Toshiba image again…
You can use either the HDD recovery (if available) or Toshiba Recovery disk which you should have created in the past.
To install the Toshiba image, just boot from such disk and follow the instruction on the screen…

Unfortunately I don't have neither.
The notebook did not come with one nor did I create any image CD.

However I understand that the disk is partitioned into C and E with a back up schedule set.

Usually the notebook should support the HDD recovery as described here:
How to recover a Toshiba notebook with the HDD recovery procedure

but if this does not function, then you need to use recovery disk…this can be ordered here:

I tried the f8 option on startup. It does respond to the f8 key stroke. HDD recovery may not be there for this satelliet model.

I see that there is a back-up disk creation option. Will I be able to use the disk if I create the disk now?

Is there any other key stroke other than the F8 that can invoke this procedure at note book startup?

" but if this does not function, then you need to use recovery disk...this can be ordered here:

Can it be made again from the disk creator method provided in the OS.

I have also tried the Windows Fixit.

It fails to run.

If possible, try to create the recovery disk using the Recovery disk creator. This should be possible if the image files are still available on the second partition.
Otherwise you will need to order the recovery disk.

I was finally able to access the HDD recovery procedure.
One needs to repeatedly press the F2 key for it to latch on.
However was not able to recover the back that was made on to the D drive. I had made just before the recovery.

After recovery I had set for automatic backups to me made. Now the drive D is full.
Is there any way to set it do a replace back-up each time instead of having to append to the previous back-up each time?

Not sure what you saved on D partition but usually the second partition contains the HDD recovery files (image files) which are necessary for HDD recovery or to create Recovery disk…

Fact is that usage of Recovery disk would format the whole HDD and would set the notebook back to factory settings.
The usage of HDD recovery would leave the D partition as it is…it would not be formatted… only the system partition (C:) would be recovered.
