Satellite L550-1C8: icons disappeared from desktop

Hello.
My hubby's Satellite suddenly went blank while he was using it. When the screen came back, all the "shortcuts" to the programmes were gone. The screen is greyish-white with the Toshiba-brand going across the middle of the screen.

How do we get the shortcuts back? Sorry for not knowing the correct "computer-terms..".

Hi

Click right on desktop. Choose “View” and ensure that option called “Show desktop icons” is enabled (marked)
