Hard drive replacement on Satellite A100-049

Hi, thanks for reading.........
Recently my Toshiba Satellite laptop has given an error on booting about imminent hard drive failure, so I purchased a new drive of exactly the same make and model, WD Scorpio Blue, 320GB.
On installing the new drive the laptop beeps quickly several times over and sometimes boots to CD or sometimes just beeps until I power off.
I've tried the hard drive in another laptop and it works fine.
I've tried to use the Toshiba recovery CD to restore the laptop back to factory, but when Vista loads it errors with a message like 'This software is not configured for the hardware', or something?
I've installed Ubuntu 11.10 and that works great, except I get the beeping whenever I restart or power on the laptop.
Can anyone point me in the right direction as it's driving me nuts!
Many thanks!
Steve

I’m confused now. As far as I know this notebook model was delivered with 120GB SATA HDD.
Have you upgraded original 120GB with 320GB HDD in the past?

Hi, Thanks for the response,
It was replaced a while ago. I'd forgotten about that though!
I do remember having this beeping issue before too, but can't remember if it had anything to do with changing the drive.
Out of interest, I have put a smaller capacity drive in this laptop and it still beeps.
Do you have any idea why the laptop might be beeping like crazy?

Beeping sound can be due to compatibility problem.
Have you upgraded RAM or is some external device connected to your laptop?
When you set BIOS to default settings is new HDD recognized properly?

The laptop recognises the hard disk, I've actually just been trying out Ubuntu on that laptop and apart from the beeping on boot (which actually carried on all the way to the log on prompt that time!), the laptop seems to work fine.
If I put the other hard drive back in the beeping stops, although I get the error about the hard drive having imminent failure!
Nothing else is plugged in to the laptop either.
In the bios the drive shows up just fine too....

Hi
The beeping sound is coming from BIOS. So usually it’s no matter if the Linux or Windows is installed on the HDD.
So according to your last post, it looks like the BIOS beeps because of the new HDD.
Usually the HDD should be compatible because SATA controller is not limited to an specific size, so 320GB size should not be too large.
Anyway, it would be interesting to know if another 320GB HDD would be compatible and if the beeping sound would stop.

I appreciate the sound is coming from the bios, I was just highlighting the fact that I know the actual hard drive is functioning as I can boot in to an operating system.
I've installed a different SATA drive and that was just an 80GB drive and that had the same problem, that works fine in the laptop it is from, but put it in the Toshiba and the beeps continue!
I don't have any other drives to hand, but I think I've tested enough. The current one is showing as failing, but boots OK with no beeping, the new 320GB drive boots OK into Linux but beeps like crazy and the 80GB drive boots into Windows XP but again beeps like crazy.
If anyone can help, I'd be very grateful, as it's driving me round the bend!
Cheers,

Hi
Since the beeps are from BIOS, I don’t think that this is related to any software or drivers…so installation of any SATA drivers would not change this…
What happens if you remove the HDD and would power up the notebook?…Does the notebook still beeping?
Test also this:
Disconnect the CD/DVD drive and power up the unit with the connected HDD… do you still notice the beep sound?

I've taken the HDD out and booted up and that does indeed still beep.
I haven't taken the CD drive out yet, I don't think that will make a difference to be honest.
With the HDD back in, I've booted from a linux live CD, so pressing F12 to boot from different media, that doesn't beep and I can still access the HDD in Linux.
I've just tried something else too. I hit F12 to boot from another device, but I selected to boot from the HDD.
Guess what? No beeping!!!
So when the laptop boots from the HDD with no interaction, it beeps.
If I select the HDD from the boot menu, it doesn't beep!
Any ideas?

So when the laptop boots from the HDD with no interaction, it beeps.
I’ve got an idea… what do you think about the theory that the beeping is not caused by HDD but keyboard?
The point is that if you want to boot from Linux live CD you have to press F12… so you use the keyboard to load the Linux… also the beeps don’t appear if you press F12 and choose HDD as booting device…
So I think the keyboard make some problems here…
Not sure if it needs to be replaced but I think this should be checked too.

That's a good idea, do you know how to remove the keyboard, so I can inspect it?

Actually, forget that, I've got the keyboard off and disconnected the ribbon cable.
And it doesn't beep when I boot up.
So hopefully, that's pointing to an odd keyboard fault?
I'm not 100% convinced, but I'll see if I can get hold of a spare keyboard and give it a try.
Thanks for your help so far, I'll report back when I manage to replace the keyboard!

Good news! The new keyboard has finally arrived and it's fixed the fault! So, no unusual beeping at bootup!
Not sure why that happened, the hard disk was the faulty part that I replaced, but then the keyboard goes too? Strange state of affairs that I'm glad to see the back of!
Many thanks for the help given here!
