Problem with Toshiba E.Steel HD 500GB USB 3.0
Posted: 10-Nov-2011 08:43

Hello guys, yesterday I bought a Toshiba HD 500GB USB 3.0 e.Steel but I have a problem, if I connect the HDD to USB 2.0 port of my laptop hard drive works perfectly, but if I connect the laptop to the USB 3.0 port detects the hdd (sometimes) and it works only for a few minutes, but if I copy files to HDD is disconnected almost immediately .... you think it is a problem with the HDD or the laptop?

i've a qosmio x770 notebook with a one month old
USB 3.0 port works seamlessly with any other USB 2.0 device
i've the last driver
i've windows 7 64 bit

Which last driver do you mean exactly?
Do you use original preinstalled Win7 that you’ve got with your notebook (factory settings)?

Don’t think its notebook or notebook’s USB issue because you said that the USB 3.0 port works seamlessly with any other USB 2.0 devices.
Maybe it a issue with the data transfer speed and therefore the data transfer interrupts.

I noticed that, when I copy large files write speed up to 86 mb/s then drops dramatically up to 22 mb/s, and auto disconnect..
How can I fix this? and how should I do?

Not sure if there is a possibility to fix this… did you try to create some smaller partitions on this external HDD and then to test the data throughput? Try to create some partitions in NTFS and FAT32 standard.

I'm having this exact same problem with my STOR.E STEEL S 1tb usb3.

Works fine on usb2 ports but disconnects itself within a few seconds of trying to a transfer a file from the device over usb3. Currently it is totally unusable in my USB3 port on my Lenovo u300s.

Is there a solution to this or do we all need to return our hard drives?

Correct
Hi
Found this details on Toshiba multimedia website:
http://www.toshiba-multimedia.com/eu/store-external-hard-drives/edition/

The STOR.E EDITION needs max 900 mA power.
This means that the HDD could be connected to 2 USB ports because one USB port provides max 500mA.

It could be possible that the notebook does not provide enough power through the USB port… maybe you should disconnect other USB devices and then test the HDD or use an Y USB cable
