Unfortunately, in the desperate hurry for a half-Terabyte space, yesterday i bought an external Toshiba Stor.E 25 aluminum 500GB, USB 3.0 (PA4236E-1HE0). When at home, attached to my mac, in a few minutes I figured out the terrible story with the "Virtual CD" situation.
Spent the whole night to grab some serious info on the internet regarding the case, and especially the situation with toshiba ones (baaaaad.....), as I need the drive to be "bootable", clean, as I intended when I paid for it.
Spent this early morning to borrow a windows machine to apply the patch, or whatever thoshiba call it.
And the only one that made the thing was the tool provided by schubi1975, "DuraMicro_release-20110808_VCD_Remove_and_Format_tool" that saved me (and a lot of you I suppose) from banging our heads into the wall, for the insane choice that toshiba made.
Also for not advertising clearly that on the package and for not clearly say on the website wich tool to use to remove the "virtual cd" crappiness. Come on Toshiba! to find the right tool I had to dig deeply into user forums! Unbelievable!
I've joined the forum just to say this.
I was not able to remove VCD from my Toshiba Stor.E Alu 2S 2TB USB 3.0 (PA4234E-1HL0) with formatter.exe.
Search button does not find a device. Format button always stays gray.
Can anyone confirm that VCD removal was successful with the same type of HDD?
Thanks for your reply.
I had always chosen "Run as administrator" without success.
Toshiba support wasn't able to help me, so I finally returned the drive and bought a different one (not from Toshiba of course).
I bought two Toshiba STORE:E ALU 2S USB3 2.5" 500gb (actually 499GB) drives, neither of which can get rid of their respective VCD using DuraMicro_release-20110808_VCD_Remove_and_Format_tool. Toshiba_drive_converter_v1.10 or a Low Level Format do not work either.
Drive is recognized by the DuraMicro tool, but on several computers and OS installations a message: "Mode Change Failed" pops up.
Is there a updated or otherwise working tool which can remove the Virtual CD?
I will also contact support and hope to get a working VCD removal tool.
