NB550D – why battery discharges so quickly
Posted: 24-Apr-2011 11:42

Well, after first full charging (during Windows 7 instalation power suply is mandatory!) everything was quite OK, but after few hours system's gone to hibernation - it's normal procedure in case of less then 10% of battery. But the problem is that a 20-30 minutes before this I checked battery status and it was 48% and system said it means about 3hour 30min working time! So the start to go to the hibernation state was a full surprise to me and I was in panic that my NB550D is broken!!!

After pluging power suply Windows woke up from hibernation state and said that battery has 7% and started charging process. Has anyone saw something like this???
Now, after full charging the battery has... let me see... 90% (and this means for system about 8hours working time, with wi-fi).

And I'm waitng what happens this time, when the battery reach 50% or less... I'll tell next time...

In my opinion this working time that you can see is not 100% right and it is “approximate” working time.
When I start my Tecra A11 with full battery it is shown that I can use notebook up to 4 hours but after 3 hours is the end.

I think there is no reason for panic.
Make full battery load and work on it just to see what maximum working time on battery power supply is. Define all settings and set low battery notification and critical battery action in advanced power settings.

Well... I could agree, that the time don't have to be precisely estimated, but if system says 48% it couldn't work only for 30 minutes!?
Toshiba declares, and others users confirm, that the working time for NB550D is about 7-9 hours (standard working with wi-fi on), so I can't understand that kind of rapid drop of battery charge state and going to hibernation.

Ufff, this time was much better, but I'm still not quite satisfied...

After second full charging it took me 3 days to discharge it :) First of all I changed low battery level and critical level: accordingly from 10 to 7% and from 5 to 3%.

Let's see tha last fragment of discharging history:
2,34h - 33% (wi-fi on)
2,31h - 28% (wi-fi on)
2,02h - 25% (wi-fi off, bluetooth on)
1,31h - 21% (wi-fi off, bluetooth on)
1,02h - 19% (wi-fi off, bluetooth on)
1,44h - 17% (wi-fi off, bluetooth off)
1,34h - 14% everything off
40min - 13%
37min - 5%
hibernation...

These changes (1,34h - 14%, 40min - 13%, 37min - 5%) were rather rapid, so you have to be careful below 15%.
Unfortunately I can't say what was the whole working time cause I've been using it 4 or 5 times for about 1-2h - approximately 6-8 hours.
Fortunately, self-discharging anytime was only 1-2% :)
Full charging proccess takes 3,30h.

Let me show you my next (and the last) report:

Conditions: wi-fi - on, video transmission via internet.
This time, after third full charging, was really good:
50 min - 20%
30 min - 12%
20 min - 8%
15 min - 6%
11 min -5%
hibernation...

So, after 3 full charging and discharging battery works OK and information about time and percentage looks good.
If anyone would happen to come with something strange with the battery, I can calm you - the battery needs 2-3 charging to get normal behaviour :)

Great! Thanks for the feedback. I can confirm this… the battery needs to be calibrated. This means the battery should be discharged completly and charged several times to get the best performance
