Satellite L500 - BSOD Identification of Vista Operating system

Hi,

I have the Satellite L500 (PSLJ0A-01F013( experiencing a BSOD (Stop: 0X000C1F5) which googling has identified as a corrupt file on the HDD. Unfortunately the MS fix needs to be applied prior to the corruption occurring. I have tried many options, I cannot force a recovery using the Press 0 key on power up and have basically given up. I intend to install a new HDD and load Vista from new. My main question is, how do I identify whether the licensed system is 64 bit or 32 bit? The Cert of authenticity only identifies it as Home Premium OEMAct.

If I reinstall Vista, is there a way to create a Toshiba recovery disk once I have got the laptop working to my satisfaction, ie with all drivers and ancillary software loaded?

Thanks in advance
Akuma

The COA key is for both 32bit and 64bit, but it will only work in an OEM version of Vista (The pre-installed Vista installation from Toshiba).

So if you install a retail/street version of Vista, you will need to buy a license from Microsoft.

I believe you can order a Recovery Disc from Toshiba. Looking on their website, the phone number is 13 30 70

The copy I have is OEM, I want to ensure I am loading the correctly licensed version. I believe the license is applicable to the machine and not the media it is supplied on and therefore I am legally entitled to install from other media. Happy to be corrected if I am wrong however I don't believe I am.
I have already investigated the avenue of obtaining a copy from Toshiba but that won't guarantee that the problem this laptop has encountered lays deeper than the OS, perhaps a hardware issue and in that case it would be a waste of money obtaining the disk from Toshiba.

Thanks

If you install own Vista version you will not be able to create Toshiba recovery disc.

Only when Toshiba recovery image is installed on your notebook you can create this disc.

What you can do now is to install own Vista with all necessary drivers, tools and utilities and use some third part application to create recovery image. Many people here have reported that good application for recovery image creation is Acronis.

You can also try to order original recovery disc from Toshiba.

Thanks Terentino,
That is now the intent, once I have determined the issue is software only. Loading my copy of Vista along with the appropriate drivers will allow me to determine if the hardware is functioning satisfactorily.

Every Toshiba notebook is delivered with preinstalled recovery image. This recovery image is activated and license code is on the bottom of your notebook. This product key belongs to this recovery image only and cannot be used for activation of any other OS version.

So if you have Microsoft installation disc and want to use it for OS installation you cannot use product key at the sticker for OS activation.

I think you need a Toshiba OEM installation, a generic OEM installation may not work.

Akuma,
Thanks I think I understand what you're saying . I'll just have to give it a try and see how I go. Temporarily and for testing only, I'll try my OEM key if the Toshiba key doesn't work. This licensing is an absolute minefield :(

Hmmm most interesting. after setting the BIOS to boot from CD, and using Hirems boot CD, I still get the BSOD. Looks like I'll have to try a new HDD :(
