Satellite A660 - Fan always on and loud
Posted: 22-Aug-2010 20:40

Hi all,

I bought the Satellite A660-10 days ago and I love it so far.
The only issue I have is the fan noise. It is always on at 53% of the speed even when I don't do anything.
I am wondering if this is normal as I have only an intel i3.

Thanks!
Pedro

Please open power plan you use and go to advanced settings. Under Toshiba power saver open option “Cooling Method” and set the value to minimum. It should reduce fan activity and your notebook will run much quieter.

I also recommend you to use “Balanced power plan”.

Of course it will not help when you play the games and CPU/GPU run on the limit.
Test it with your “everyday activities” and with other power plan.

I have tested it on several notebooks and it helps. I don’t see the reason why it should not work on your Satellite too.

Omg man do u really think i didnt test it, ofc i tested it on everyday activities(i dont play games much on laptop),
Heres what happens: i choose cooling method-battery optimized and for a 3-5s fans are at 0% but after that they come back at 70% so no changes at all.
Im running win7 home premium 64 bit on a660 11m laptop, im telling u man, no effect at all here....

Btw the only solution ive come across is to open winamp and to listen to some good music, that way i wont hear these noisy fans.... hehe sadly true lol.

Thanks guys for your reponses!
So I try the power saver and it does not really change anything. Still at 53%. I am now wondering if I should return it and buy something else.
I am pretty sure this due to the Nvidia graphic card, I had a L500 with an intel integrated graphis card and it was so silent.
Anyway, if you have any other ideas, let me know.

U see Pedro even for him it doesnt work, and i know some other members of this forum who tried to set it to minimum through power management and it didnt work for them too
I wish it worked on mine ;(

I check the Nvidia drivers and as per Toshiba they are up to date...

However if I go to the nvidia website there is an update:

Verde Notebook Release 256

Version:258.96 WHQL
Release Date:2010.07.19
Operating System:Windows Vista 64-bit, Windows 7 64-bit
Language:English (U.S.)
File Size:143 MB

http://www.nvidia.com/object/notebook-win7-winvista-64bit-258.96-whql-driver.html

Did you try this?

Yes i did and it didnt reduce noise, those drivers made my laptop loose brightness control so i rolled back to drivers i had already installed.
But try it urself maybe u ll have better experience

Btw u should come to my house to see what is really noisy laptop ;)

I don’t have Satellite A660 and cannot say for sure what happen exactly on this notebook but at the moment I have several notebooks at home including brand new Satellite U500 and I have reduced cooling method on each of them and run in Balanced power plan.

All of them are pretty quiet and fan activity is on minimum level. It runs constantly but on slow speed.
I must try to check this on Satellite A660. Friend of mine has one.

By the way: doud be careful with display driver update especially with drivers from non-Toshiba page. Maybe you will get more graphic performance but I’m afraid the cooling fan will be probably louder than now.
