Unexpected I/O error has occurred

Just got a laptop from a friend that he stepped on while moving.
The sensor area is a tiny bit squished, very little.

I turn it on and it loads the Toshiba screen, then when tries to load Windows right after the Toshiba screen it goes blank for about 20 seconds and this pops up.

Is it just a matter of getting a new Hard Drive? Or could the motherboard be poached as well?

Windows may just be corrupted. Test the RAM using Memtest ( www.memtest.org - bootable CD ) and run Recovery by holding the Zero key during power up, or run Recovery from the Windows Boot menu (Press F8 before Windows boots).

Which should I DL, there's a lot V4.00? Bootable Binary .gz? or .zip?. I tried pushing F8 before boot and it does nothing for a few seconds then has a horrible beep.

If you don’t have a CD/DVD drive then I would forget all this tests…
You need the CD/DVD drive in order to reinstall the OS again if you have the bootable CD.

If your notebook support the USB booting then you could try to reinstall the Win XP from bootable USB flash stick.

A friend of mine threw in one of his CD drives and tried installing Windows 7 and Windows XP and both times it only got so far. Has problems reading drivers in the comp. I think the motherboard is toast.
