Can't boot from USB

Hi all,

I've followed the instructions on the Ubuntu website for creating a bootable USB stick, but I can't get it to work.

All I get is boot prompt "boot:" If i press enter it says "kernel not found"

Do I have to have the intel atom chip to use this ? I was trying it out on my PC (AMD Thunderbird XP3000+)

Cheers

I would suggest to create a bootable usb stick from command line. I personally don't trust GUI applications. If you'd like to do so, you can do it in 1 single step, like this:

dd bs=8M if=path/to/image.img of=/dev/sd[x] (This command line erases your usb stick, so backup necessary files first, if needed.)

/dev/sd[x] refers to the full path of your usb device let's say /dev/sdb and not /dev/sdb1 , that's why make sure you don't have any other usb storage devices attached to your pc.

Please make sure also first to have your usb stick unmounted, before writting the image file to it. The image file can be downloaded from here.

Enjoy.

Sorry to thread hijack, but I'm having the same problem that I cannot boot the installation of UNR 9.04 from USB.

I have updated my bios drivers to 2.00 (Using the DOS driver technique) so I know there is nothing wrong with the USB ports nor the booting options, i have created the boot usb drive using both the command line and the image writer on here https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromImgFiles#Ubuntu , and both times the boot option did not detect/notice the usb drive and booted straight to Ubuntu 8.04, I tried selecting from the boot menu (F12) but that didn't work, and I have tried the boot disk on a windows laptop and it recognised it straight away.

Apart from installing VLC and installing the updates, I haven't modified any of the settings, any ideas?

Note that some laptops simply cannot boot from USB Key. Assuming you have an NB100 or NB200, these models can definitely boot from USB key.

Have you tried using makebootfat (available on Linux and Windows) to make your USB key bootable?

thanks for the speedy responce.

The usb pen drive is bootable, I used the Toshiba utility mentioned here http://blogs.oreilly.com/digitalmedia/2004/10/utility-to-make-usb-flash-driv.html to make a dos boot disk to install the bios update and that worked fine on the NB100, it just didn't work when I put the Ubuntu img on the disk.

Must be the BIOS. I have the same problem, since I made the update from BIOS v1.10 to 1.90. With v1.10 booting from an usb stick just worked.
But now that you write, that v2.0 doesn't solve the problem either, I won't go through the hassle of reinstalling UNR 8.04 again, just to make a bios update.

1.9 doesn't work either in regard to booting from usb stick. The release, the netbook came with was fine, though.

Currently I have Crunchbang 9.04.1 (based on Ubuntu 9.04) installed.
The time to boot is vastly reduced in comparison to 8.04, plus 9.04 recognizes my UMTS-stick out of the box.
You need an external drive, however, but I'd say it's worth the money, since you're more independent in your choice, what to run on this otherwise capable machine.

well, if anyone has installed UNR 9.04 on the NB100 after the 8.04 updates and a bios update to 2.0, any tips would be appreciated, amended bios settings, tricks etc..

I really do not want to factory reset the entire system.

Hi Everyone,

First post. I have just installed 9.04 on my NB100 with BIOS 2.0.

I made the image on the flash drive using a Windows imaging programme.

The flash drive was recognised by the BIOS under FDD, not under USB memory as I expected. Also, I did not at first realise that your chosen boot option has to moved to the top of the list using function keys, not just highlighted, so the system kept booting from the HDD on the first few attempts.

Hope this helps. G.

I can confirm that selecting the FDD option worked for me straight away, I'm still on Bios 2.0 and I made the image using the instructions on this page https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UNR/Installation/Easy (The Linux Usb Image writer)

So thanks to Grove_1 (See, newbies can make a difference :) )
