Tecra A9-150: speakers don't mute when plugging headphones

Hello,

I recently purchased for my company 3 Tecra A9-150 laptops, that all have the following issue :

Plugging headphones into the headphones outlet will not mute the built-in laptop speakers. Additionally, no sound goes out on the headphones.

Is that a hardware related problem, or driver related ?
All systems are running Windows Vista SP1.

Thanks in advance for your assistance & best regards,
Max M.

Hi

Plugging headphones into the headphones outlet will not mute the built-in laptop speakers. Additionally, no sound goes out on the headphones
Usually the speakers should disable automatically and the sound should switch to the connected headphones.
The headphone jack supports a tiny switch which enables and disables the speakers while the headphones are connected. Maybe this switch malfunctions ?:|

But first of all you should check:
  • if you have used the right jack. As far as I know you should use the right jack. This is a headphone jack.
  • check if your headphones work on another computer/notebook
  • remove the Vistas SP1 and check if you would notice an improvement.

To be honest it sounds really unbelievable. Can you please tell me which headphones you have?
Have you tried to test it with two different headphones?

Hi Jayjay,

Thank you for your reply. We tried 2 different headphones and a set of external speakers, all using the standard jack plug, fitted in as it should. They work fine on my Toshiba Satellite A200 and on their older notebooks, but nothing to do with the three Tecra machines. The headphones/external speakers are plugged in, but the sound keeps going out from the integrated laptop speakers.

I will try without SP1 once I fly back again to our UK offices, but seriously this makes no sense. The sound card is apparently working properly...

Hello, yes it's quite unbelievable ... I don't recall what were their earphones, but they had also some standard desktop speakers (brand Trust I think) and I also used my Philips headphones that I use with my iPod & laptop.

Quite odd to say the least!

Hi

This seems to be a software setting issue…
I assume you’ve got a Realtek sound card chip and that the Realtek HD audio manager has been preinstalled.

You should find it in the control panel.
In Realtek HD audio manager you could find settings for two analog jacks; headphone and microphone…

Please connect check the settings making a right click on the headphone jack…. There should be something like disable speakers while headphone has been connected….

PS: Please ensure that you are using the latest Realtek sound driver!
